God led the Israelites to the Red Sea without any boats in sight.
Unlike them, we have the privilege of hindsight; we know how the story ends.
But imagine the fear of the Israelites: fleeing an angry pharaoh, Egypt in chaos, being delivered from centuries of slavery, not knowing where they’re going next, the soldiers behind them, and the sea ahead.
And there are no boats.
God could have worked a number of ways in that moment. He could have stopped the pursuing army with a wall of fire. He could have struck them all down on the spot. He could have ensured that there were boats waiting for the Israelites.
But He led them to the water. He let their enemies pursue them.
He led them to a point where they had no choice but to have faith.
Then, He did something no one could take credit for. He did something no one could brush off as a coincidence. He did something that showed His power and glory. He performed a miracle; He split the sea in half.
It’s easy to read this story and think ‘They should have had faith! Look what God did for them!’
Yet how often is it us? Standing before a sea, our enemies closing in, and there are no boats. No way forward, no sign of deliverance, no indication that God is listening to our cries of desperation.
The parting of the Red Sea seems very distant in those moments. We often don’t connect the miracles of the Bible with our own needs now. That was different, we think, that was Biblical times.
But what if it’s exactly the same? What if God is leading us to a point where we have no choice but to trust Him? No choice but to have faith.
The Bible is the Word of God. A gift to us so we can get to know Him. Through its pages, we get to know His character, His heart, His power.
He has not changed. He hasn’t abandoned us. He’s not slumbering up in heaven.
The same God who split the Red Sea hears your prayers. The same God who rose Jesus from the dead wants a relationship with you. The same God who created you wants to see your faith.
If your back is against the wall, remember the Red Sea. Remember Daniel in the lion’s den. Remember the Hebrew boys thrown into the fire.
God uses situations that look like defeat to bring victory to His people, and glory to His name.
Have faith. Or God saves.
Always,
Emily
Our God is a God who saves; he is the Lord, our Lord, who rescues us from death. Psalm 68:20
