God gives thousands of promises in scripture. He promises to be with us. To see us through hard things. To deliver us from our enemies.
Beyond the pages of the Bible, He continues to speak to each one of us, giving us personal promises through his Holy Spirit.
Yet – God’s promises aren’t what we’re meant to praise; we’re meant to praise Him.
It’s not deliverance that we praise, it’s the God that sees us through. We don’t bow down TO freedom, but to the God that granted it. We don’t fall to our knees FOR success, only for the King of Kings that raised us up.
Despite knowing this, there’s often a part of us that believes God is the avenue to which we’ll get what we want.
He gives us a vision and a calling, and suddenly we’re blind to everything else. We fix our eyes on the mountain we intend to climb, and the Creator of that mountain becomes a side character in our own personal quest.
I know I’m guilty of this. I see the mountain and run to it, eager to clamor up the side. My hands become caked in mud, my feet slipping beneath me, only to look down after a long fight and see that I’ve gotten myself nowhere.
When we turn our attention back to the Lord, everything changes. He gives peace, He welcomes us back, and He shows us the path He had already carved out for us while we were trying to forge our own.
Exodus 14:14 says, “The Lord will fight for you, you need only be still.”
This stillness isn’t passive. It’s courageous to lean on the Lord and trust that He will take care of things. It goes against what we’re taught: fight for what you want, hustle and grind, make it happen.
This stillness requires faith, focus, and centering on the only One who has never known defeat.
Take time today to re-focus on the Lord. If needed, repent for valuing the promise more than the Promiser. Commit to slowing down, walking beside Him, and your praise being to Him alone.
